My original lens, 18-55 mm was great for close up but seriously lacking for distances. My other lens, 76-170mm was great for distance shots but impossible for closer shots. This lens, 28-105 mm gives me the best of both worlds with quick focusing and great close shots as well as decent reach for clear and detailed distance shots. I would highly recommend this lens for general use while doing walk around photography while traveling to avoid having to carry a huge bag of various lenses everywhere.

I bought it for social events, the zoom range is very useful 28-105, the F 3.5-4.5 (I use in FF) helps a lot in low light situations without using a high ISO, the focus is nice, high quality build and metal body. Don't expect the best sharpness, most of zoom lenses has not good good sharpness and this is one of them, but hey! for $50-$80 bucks is one of the best deals you can find on internet/

I purchased the EF 28-105 mm as a replacement for a stock kit 18-55mm. Before I continue, I should note my copy was treated well by former owners and came to me fully functional and almost blemish free.... I wanted a more solid build and solid feel, which the EF 28-105 mm delivers with a metal mount and a weight about twice that of the plastic kit lens. I also wanted a more versatile zoom range for use assisting with school-related photography at work. The 28-105mm range is great on a crop sensor camera for shooting up close or wide angle shots in an auditorium, a small gym, or for interesting field compression shots of a hurdle race, for intimate portrait-like shots of vaulters, jumpers, throwers, golfers, etc. Since there are few landscapes in a school, the range of 28-105 is far superior to 18-55 for me. The image sharpness is equal or better than my kit 18-55mm IS at all comparable focal lengths with only slightly lower color saturation in low light. In bright light, my copy of the EF 28-105 has no glaring weakness, with good contrast and good color saturation in addition to good sharpness and a very fast, accurate, and virtually silent focus. On the down side, my copy suffers unwanted zoom creep if the lens is aimed downward, so we improvised a stretchy athletic tape wrap that fixed the problem without interfering with the manual focus ring. Not really a negative, but noteworthy, is that this lens is not really much of an improvement over the kit lens for low light shots with its 3.5-4.5 aperture, but is at a wider aperture at equal focal length than the kit. My copy ran about half the cost of the newest 18-55mm, about one third the cost of a new 18-135mm, and about one tenth the cost of "L" glass, so with no real gripes on image quality, this lens was a superb bang for the buck. Assuming the copy you get is in good repair, I highly recommend it. I'd rate it a 5 out of 5 stars for a non-professional lens, especially in value for the money.Read full review
I am a entry level enthusiast in photography. Bought this lens because I want something better and faster than standard kit lens that came with my 600D. The lens is a bit old but picture quality is better most of the time, when compared with standard 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS EF lens that come with many EOS cameras as a kit. Colours are apparently more vibrant. Pictures are not as sharp but close enough. Effect in adjusting depth of field is more visible. background blur much better than standard lens. Range of focal length is a bit inconvenient. But for a lens that is under $200 and that has USM feature and wide aperture, it is impressive.
This is a versatile lens which lessens the need to change lenses. It also has the manual option to override the auto-focus, which helps if the lens is focusing on an object closer or farther away than the object or person that I wish to photograph. The only down-side to the lens is that it is markedly heavier than I expected, which adds to the carrying weight of the camera. The review on ebay of this particular lens was very helpful in navigating through the two or three variations of this Canon lens that are on the market. This aided me in making sure that I was getting the higher-rated lens for my money and not a less desirable version. I would buy it again.
