About this product

Product Information

Combining music, dance, and Native American myths, this program is a pastiche and celebration of the variety of American's Pre-Columbian cultures. An interesting contrast with modern urban life is made with the program's opening "Urban Overture", a dance number with a techno flavor. A highly regarded look at human cultures and spirituality. Introduced by Kevin Costner.

  • POOR. Behind the scenes longer than show itself!!!

When I first saw this concert back in 1998 on PBS, I thought, how great it was. When I found out nearly 11 years later, that it was available, albeit only on VHS (never officially released on DVD), I rushed to buy it. The tape arrived in excellent condition, I popped it in the vcr and watched it on the big screen. Video quality, albeit only 480i and on analogue tape, was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Guess my memory didn't include how SHORT the whole thing was though. This is where the rub comes in. The "Making OF" documentary was actually LONGER than the video. OR atleast it seemed because it seemed to "Drag ON" with endless "We did this, and we considerd that". Alot of it was done under the consultation of "Chief" Jerry "Hawk" ...

Cherokee for good music. The traditional dances are 100% genuine as is the regalia worn by the dancers. I was AD for many powwows so I know the real deal when I see it. The music is new age style for the most part but parts are definitely native. Many native musicians and dancers in this presentation. The other dancers shown are from a non-native dance troupe. Robert Maribal performs his usual fine flute style. In the overall native community there were some mixed reviews but mainly for there being more modern style dance than traditional native dance. Some did not like Chief Hawk Pope being involved to the degree he was but that’s mainly because his tribal group is not a federally recognized band of Shawnee.
