Presented almost entirely in song and narrated by Antonio Banderas as a fictional everyman, the film charts the alternately revered and reviled Evita's rise from poverty to become a film and radio actress; her relationship with President Juan Per�n (Jonathan Pryce); and her tragic death from cancer at age 33.Banderas, a surprisingly moving singer, and the inimitable Madonna, who took voice lessons before filming commenced to expand her vocal range, provide the emotional bedrock for the eminently enjoyable film with their charismatic screen presences. The music, including the Oscar-winning song "You Must Love Me," weaves an entrancing web, and the sets and costumes are awe inspiring. Parker does a fine job of adapting Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical for the big screen. The director's vision shines clearly here: Like PINK FLOYD: THE WALL, EVITA is an enchanting mixture of epic fairy tale and sociopolitical psychodrama.

Madonnas Eva Perón Portrayed through Musical Elegance
This musical film chronicals both the beloved and rejected Evita's rise from poverty to become a radio and film star; then, First Lady of Argentina. It also gives us a glimpse of her relationship with President Juan Perón (Jonathan Pryce). Viewers are brought to an emotional pique when the Argentinian people grieve for Evita (Madonna) when she dies from cancer at age 33. The music earned an Oscar for the winning theme song, You Must Love Me which Madonna performs magnificently well. Director Parker adapts composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical for the big screen with finesse. Do not think that this film is not political. Since Eva Perón's history's presented almost entirely as a musical, Madonna has the opportunity of a lifetime to demonstrate to any nay-Sayers that as a silver screen leading lady in a major musical she can deliver a tremendously convincing personification. Madonna is not simply a very sexy pop singer! After experiencing her performance as Evita, I came away feeling like Madonnas got much more to give to a wide array of audiences for decades to come (hopefully). Antonio Banderas & Madonna are well matched. Banderas narrative delivery with his Latino accent makes the cultural ethnicity befitting. Banderas talent as a singer is quite good. But, his does not move me the way Madonnas does. This performance was one of the first times the public had the chance to witness Madonna acting as a refined and elegant lady. Casting her in this kind of role was a stroke of genius that made Evita a modern classic film. However a big one, I wonder what Evita would have been had Andrew Lloyd Webber's gorgeous compositions not been the material that Madonna had to work with?~
