I bought a selection of 12 Dolly Parton studio (not compilation) albums released from 1968 to 2011 for my father's Christmas present. I listened to all of them to check they worked, and was interested to hear what Dolly Parton's wider collection of work sounded like, as I had obviously heard the big hits like Jolene and so forth, but the majority never gets airplay and never will as is always the case for all artists in the music business. Although I sometimes listen to American country & western music it is a bit off centre for me, I enjoyed listening to these, and this album was my favorite of her modern work, and I felt it was easily equal to her pre 1980's albums which I also felt were particularly good. I do generally like music from the 70's so this is unsurprising. This is part of Dolly Parton's bluegrass album trilogy, The Grass is Blue, Little Sparrow and Halos and Horns, I got all of these as I had an idea they might be a bit special and this is the outstanding one in my opinion. The tracks throughout are really good in terms of both the music and lyrics. It was fascinating researching this and reading about Dolly Parton's recording history, surprisingly many of her earlier albums are not available on CD, and only a few achieved significant chart success, even in the US country charts, so her work is much less well known and recognised than I had imagined.
