Nice collection of some classic Jay Ward! It seems old hat today, but this was the ground breaker for those who copied the same comedy styling (looking at you, Woody Allen) later…great to hear some of the star voices of Rocky and Bullwinkle back in action in this spoofing of silent movies. Hokey smoke!

I used to watch this show in the early 1960's when I was a youngster. I found it very funny to see how they would come out with silent film snippets and put their own voice-overs on them to create a completely different and comical scenario, much like the Bloopers of today. I bought this set of DVDs to find the fun again, but it wasn't like it was when I was a boy. It was still funny, just not as funny. Probably it's just me plus 45+ years, or maybe it's just that you really can't go home again. If you've never seen these episodes before, and if you somewhat enjoy B&W television or silent film shows, you will very likely enjoy this set. If you are a child of the 21st Century, probably you will not.
I watched this show faithfully as a 10-year-old (also pestered Mom & Dad to turn the channel to Ernie Kovacs). It's classic Jay Ward, in the tradition of Bullwinkle and Boris Badenov but a little heavier on the satire. One of the more experimental shows on TV in the early '60s; unfortunately, the topical nature of the scripts dates it quite a bit. The Hans Conreid segments as "host" are a waste, kind of like a Bob Hope stand-up. Considering his brilliance in "The Twonky" and "the 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T," Hans could have been a lot better.
Fractured Flickers rocks! Saw them when they were new to television and they have not lost their appeal. Jay Ward and Bill Scott were genius. And Han Conreid as host was perfect. Great humor and even greater irreverence. Long may Fractured Flickers be available to entertain us.

This old show used to come on after the Ernie Kovacs show, probably around 10:30 on a weeknight which always seemed way too late for a kid to watch in those days. Fortunately, I had a father who liked Ernie and the Flickers too. The quality of these shows on DVD seems to be very, very good, considering their age and probably lack of proper care over the years. That old vintage look of black and white goes good with all the creaky silent film snippets. Going back and forth on the menu and fast forwarding through credits and such works fine. I haven't seen all these shows in probably 45 years, occasionally a local station might have shown some of them, but never at a good time, and these were the days pre-VCRs. This DVD set has the entire series on it, and they have me laughing my ass off when I first watch them, and then again when I share some shows with my wife or grown kids. I ended up buying extra sets for my brother and stepfather for a late Christmas present. Alas, my father's no longer around. God bless host Hans Conried and creators Jay Ward and Bill Scott, and the voices of June Foray and Paul Frees for what certainly has to be some of the zaniest and most hysterical TV comedy ever invented!Read full review
