The first television series on the BBC from David Mitchell and Robert Webb in a comedy sketch format. This follows three series of That Mitchell and Webb Sound for BBC radio and includes some sketches that were originally written for the radio. There are several running jokes/situations (Numberwang, the Snooker Commentators, the Adventures of Sir Chicken Digby Caesar etc.) and the two stars are supported by their long-time cohorts Olivia Colman and James Bachman, both regulars of the radio shows. The other regulars are Gus Brown and Paterson Joseph (also in Green Wing with Olivia Colman, and Peep Show). I first became aware of Mitchell and Webb through Peep Show, which I thought had some promise although it had its faults. But it was through appearances on other programmes such as 'Mock the Week' and 'Have I Got News...' that I really became a fan of David Mitchell. Subsequently I even had the pleasure of seeing David in the flesh, when I was in the audience for the pilot episode of 'The Unbelievable Truth' for BBC Radio 4. In my opinion David Mitchell is the best comedian to emerge over the past few years. Robert Webb is a perfect partner for David but I have had little chance to see Robert on his own. I recommend That Mitchell and Webb Look as the majority of the sketches are very funny, although there are some that I feel do not work. Even with a running gag like Numberwang (which appears once in each of the six episodes) that does not seem to have a real structure, there is enough variation that keeps the joke running all the way through; it is amusing although for the life of me I can't understand why! Compare this with the running gags on 'The Fast Show', which seemed to just revolve around the repetition of certain catch-phrases. But some of the material falls short. Much of the ex-radio material is better in the audio-only format (although not the SS officers sketch - just superb). It's not that the material isn't funny; more that nothing is added through the visual medium. As for the bonus features, there are documentaries and diaries around the making of the series; some out-takes (although I can't believe that there weren't a lot more that could have been added); and some interesting deleted scenes. The documentaries/diaries are comparable in quality with those on 'THe Might Boosh' DVDs. The out-takes mainly relate to one sketch but are genuinely funny. And the deleted scenes are certainly worth watching; some are better than some of the broadcast material. Having bought the DVD I will certainly be keeping it and I hope that the BBC will commission further series because some of the sketches really are excellent.Read full review
If you like what you have seen on TV recently (Peep Show Series 5 and That Mitchell And Webb Look - Series 2) You will love That Mitchell And Webb Look - Series 1. With Sketches such as The Crime Fighting Duo BMX Bandit And The Angel Sumoner, And The Birth Of The Sketches Using the popular game NUMBERWANG! This is must buy for any Mitchell And Webb Fan! I would give this 5 out of 5 but there is one sketch in the DVD that includes two people reviewing snooker and i didnt like that one so much so its 4/5 from me but it is very very funny! By this DVD its a snatch on ebay at £6 including postage (thats what i got it for!)
