Finally trainer who understands that a dog is a dog not a human! Being such learn completely different. with this method you aren't waiting for you dog to do something you want out if random chance and then rewarding them for it but teaching them what is expected out of them. My 13 year old daughter has read and started applying obedience side of the training to our 3 dogs, a lab/German shepherd mix 3 1/2 years old, a mid-sized rescue dog that as her own issues with trust she's 1 1/2 yr old, and a small mongrel my son found while jogging about 8 mo. old. I have seen definate results in only a of a couple of weeks. Some people are critical of this method because they take it out of context and dont even try using it, and think he is abusive but that is far from the truth. Its well worth the money and is simple to use on any dog from a small lap dog to a family protection dog. Especially effective on problem dogs that other training has failed with.Read full review

I know,I know...it's an old book...so what? Saved my dog's life and my property. Got a dog that was under death sentence by police dept due to many biting incidents....this book straightened him out but good...and not by being brutal. Dog trainers feel this is the book for strong-willed dogs or problem dogs. Does great job of teaching you how to choose a dog and also to decide if a particular dog should be trained for a particular kind of work or not. OF PARTICULAR NOTE: makes you understand there are different kinds of guarding...watchdogs who alert you and scare off burglars, but never bite, personal protection dogs who bite attackers only when you say to do so, and area protection dogs who patrol and bite anyone who breaks in, but don't bite when people are around. VERY easy to understand. Just remember...if it's not too late, puppy training is 10,000% more effetive than any other kind. Train 'em when they're babies FIRST! That's something you try to do before you get this book.Read full review
Don't lame .a dog for not understanding sometimes. They have no concept of gray areas. It's blaxk and white. I have been using this book since it first came out and have trained literally dozens of dogs over the years. This is not for those who think you should ask your dog if it willing to obey. A dog that will come EVERY time it is called can a tually have more freedom . Though I have used Koebler's method for over fifty years, I have never broken a dog's spirit. I fave lent my copy.out many times and the last time it didn't come back so I am replacing it.

The title of this book is a bit misleading as only the first half of the book concerns guard dog training. The second half is an excellent instruction manual for the first-time or seasoned dog owner on basic training. It starts with long and short leash training and moves into other simple commands as well. The author was a long-time dog trainer and worked as Disney's head trainer for many years. His writing style is very fluid and the hand-drawn illustrations visually show the correct procedures for his training regimen. The book teaches a sort of "tough love" mentality that is crucial for the proper training of all breeds of dogs and may very well be an eye opener for those dog owners who believe that some sort of praise & reward system works best. I highly recommend the book.
There are a lot of wannabe gurus who have no clue about Bill and his accomplishments. He personally trained over 14,000 dogs long before the internet. He won UD titles, trained dogs in WW2 and for Disney movies. The detractors have never matched these accomplishments. The Pryor trainers will not be able to match the level in heeling. I was lucky in that I actually talked to Bill . I had trained a dog to CD level using his methods. Bill was well aware of complete Operant conditioning and what he did is for working dogs that must perform under the worst conditions.
