We checked out several building books from the library, and this was not one of them. We looked at several and chose three or four to purchase. I saw this one online and was a little leary to just take a chance, but the price was good, so I figured what the heck. It was the best one of the bunch! We think the pricing info. alone is worth it. They did spend relatively more time than necessary convincing you that building on your own is really a good idea, and talking about all the schemes of contractors. I don't agree that all contractors are quite as bad as they make out, it is pretty one sided in that way, but it is a good resource and if you can sort of get past the early pages and simply accept that they're trying to "sell" you hard on the owner builder process, then the rest of it is on target and INVALUABLE.Read full review
If you are planning to build a new home, this book is an absolute must read. You can save thousands and thousands of dollars by being your own general contractor! This book takes you on a step by step tour of exactly how to get it all done, even if you've never touched a hammer in your life. I am building a guest house (not with my own two hands) and using this book as a guide. there are budgets, templates and tons of real world examples to help you get started from scratch. I highly recommend this book.
