About this product

Product Information

Kenneth Branagh has tackled many of Shakespeare's works during his time a an actor and director. His 1996 version of HAMLET was lauded for its faithful replication of the Bard's vision, but Branagh had already taken a stab at directing some of Shakespeare's words prior to this, with 1988's TWELFTH NIGHT. The story takes place in the aftermath of a shipwreck, as twins Viola and Sebastian crawl from the wreckage. A confusing and comedic tale subsequently unfolds, with Viola disguising herself as a man, and finding affection in some strange places. Shot for British television, Branagh's TWELFTH NIGHT is a welcome addition to the oeuvre of screen adaptations of Shakespeare's works.

  • An Evening's Entertainment, or Two Nights' Study?

Twelfth Night (2005, DVD)is Kenneth Branagh's production of the play Shakespeare presented at court for the winter holidays. "Twelfth Night" refers to the evening of the 12th day of Christmas (which is the eve of Epiphany, the feast of the Three Kings), and it was a time for all kinds of merry-making, including the Tom-Foolery with which this play abounds. Branagh tries to bring out the Christmas aspects of the play by casting it in a Dickension setting, reminiscent of some productions of "A Christmas Carol." Despite this, and the prominence of a Christmas tree in the courtyard, I did not realize much of a Christmas "feel." This is because, as Branagh states in the commentary that accompanies this production, he sought to bring out the serious or tragic aspects of each of the characters: ...

  • Twelfth Night. What a tragedy.

Very disappointing if you expect a Shakespearean play. Set as it was in the 1890s, the costuming and scenes did not match the lines. If you are going to move a play 300 years into its future, have the sense to change the dialog and the title. Poor casting was reminiscent plays of Peter Pan. The principle character was totally unconvincing as a woman playing a man. She could not have been taken for a man by anyone except perhaps Helen Keller. It was reminiscent of the old Superman shows where even kids could see that Clark Kent was just Superman in glasses. Viola's voice and features make it impossible to achieve a "suspension of disbelief" and get caught up in the play. Also, if you watch this expecting a comedy, you will be sorely disappointed. It is neither light-hearted nor ...

  • Kenneth Branaugh's staging of 12th Night

A good staging of a play which combines pathos and comedy. If you are a teenager trying to get out of reading the book, accustomed to watching "The Tudors"--rich sets, colors, luscious costumes, and B- History, this will seem a bit slow and labored. Otherwise, those who like to watch plays will like this. Aguecheek well cast, as is Malvolio. The Dickensian style was not a distraction for me.

  • PRODUCTION VALUE

Few or no cuts to text make for a full, satisfying production. A great Viola/Caesario.

  • Twelfth Night ( 2005)

The story starts off with a shipwreck, then the characters turn into dysfunctional lovers with traingles that are sppof-like in nature. Director Ken Branaugh does a great job with this Shakespear story.
