Taking place four years after the events chronicled in 1998's hit arcade game and subsequent Dreamcast port, Namco's Soul Calibur II continues its predecessor's weapons-based combat from within larger 3D environments complete with walls and breakable objects. Among the 13 returning characters from the series, which began in 1995 as Soul Edge, are Astaroth, Ivy, Hwang, Kilik, Xianghua, Taki, Heishiro, Voldo, and Nightmare. In addition to a retooled 3D engine featuring eight-way directional movement, a lineup of ten new characters has entered the fray, including Cassandra, Sophitia's younger sister, Necrid, a character designed by comic book artist Todd McFarlane, and Nintendo's Link from The Legend of Zelda, a GameCube exclusive.<br><br>The story begins as the mysterious and powerful Soul Edge makes its presence known to the world. Infecting anyone who wields it with a lust for power and domination, the sword had most recently found its way into young Siegfried's inexperienced grip. Transformed into an entity called Nightmare, the once noble knight is rumored to have caused widespread death and destruction throughout the latter half of the 16th century. Worse yet, illness and strange happenings have befallen those who once fought for control of the evil blade. The few who survived plan on battling for the enchanted weapon once more, some to destroy it, some to harness its power for their own gain. <br><br>Seven modes include Arcade, Versus, Survival, Team Battle, Time Attack, Practice, and Weapon Master, which offers players a chance to collect over 200 weapons while fulfilling a character's distinct storyline. Players engage rival fighters while advancing across a world map and must satisfy specific conditions to win, such as performing a combo attack, defensive move, or throwing an enemy off a platform. Once new weapons are acquired, ranging from battle-axes and swords to staves and spears, they can be used in other modes of play. Arcade mode is based on the 2002 coin-op game, Versus has players battling a friend, Survival is a test of endurance against a steady flow of enemies, and Team Battle involves pitting two groups of characters against one another. Time Attack challenges players to defeat opponents in record time, while Practice helps players familiarize themselves with the various moves characters can perform.

The PS4 and controller work just fine. Seller communicated promptly and was pleasant to deal with. Packaging was good and the item was shipped quickly. It wasn't made clear in the description what kind of cord comes with the console. I assumed it would be a power cord but it was an HDMI cable instead. You can sort of tell from the pic but a better desciption would help. I was able to buy a power cord locally for $9 so no big deal. Good price for everything, would buy from matthewsmerc again.

One of the best guest characters ever featured on Soul Calibur! Great game!
This game is a really fun classic Soul Calibur installment featuring Link from The Legend of Zelda series. That's it's main selling point and it worked on me! He's one of the most over-powered characters in the game and is a blast to play with. The Gamecube controllers leave a little to be desired for a fighting game, but I knew what I was getting into. I'm not reviewing the controllers anyway. The game is fun, goofy, and awesome just like I remember it. A true fighting masterpiece.
Of the three version of this game, I'd say just because of the controls. This is the definitive Soulcalibur Two to pick up. I own all three and I enjoy playing this one the most. Now for the Xbox Original I love playing as Spawn. But playing as Link the Hero of Time is still by far the coolest experience. As for the Gameplay, it is solid. There is a lot of content to grab in SC2. You will be fighting lots and lots of enemies. It never gets old. As for which is the best version of Soul Calibur, most likely SC3 for PS2. But, when it comes to controls and fast paced action, this is a wonderful title you could sink a lot of hours into. While the World burns, you could be mastering input commands on that beautiful artwork of a Gamecube controller. Amazing game so far
I bought this game becuase I have always loved the Soul Calibur series but have never owned it myself. Now having the chance to really play the game I am just as pleased. I like the fighting style of this game and the graphics are extremely good, even though this is an earlier version. The multitude of game modes is also a wonderful addition. One thing I don't like is that in Soul Calibur II you can not customize your characters as freely as you are able to in later editions that I was more used to playing. Overall though, I would recomend this game to anyone who likes hand-to-hand combat style fighting.I bought this game becuase I have always loved the Soul Calibur series but have never owned it myself. If you played and enjoyed the original Soul Calibur, chances are good that you'll also enjoy the sequel since it's so much like the first game. That also means Soul Calibur II won't impress you as much as its predecessor, since you've seen most of these characters, their weapons, and their moves before, and the available gameplay modes are nothing out of the ordinary. Soul Calibur II is the long-awaited sequel to one of the all-time greatest fighting games. For the majority of players, the most significant difference between Soul Calibur II and its predecessor will be cosmetic, though the visuals haven't been overhauled completely. The returning characters all look different and the stages are all new, but many of the animations (even for some of the new characters) are recycled from the previous game, as is the flow and feel of a typical match. As before, gameplay involves four buttons, corresponding to your character's horizontal slash, vertical slash, kick, and guard. Using various combinations of these and the directional pad, you can make your characters unleash dozens of different moves. A number of the characters even have alternate fighting stances, which they can readily switch between to vary up their attacks. There's a two-tiered rock-paper-scissors system here that's more or less identical to the system that worked so well in Soul Calibur: Low attacks hit high-blocking opponents, mid attacks hit low-blocking opponents, and high attacks tend to beat out mid attacks. Additionally, vertical slashes tend to have priority over horizontal slashes but can be dodged laterally, while horizontal slashes can counter an opponent who's sidestepping too often. Add in guard impact moves, which all characters can use to deflect their foes' attacks, and soul charge moves, which all characters can use to power up their attacks, and you've got a deep, tried-and-true combat system. The gameplay has been tweaked since Soul Calibur, to account for some of the issues that highly experienced players of the previous game picked up on. However, most players won't really notice the different properties of crouching or of lateral movement or things like that. Of further note, the game controls well using the default PS2, Xbox, and GameCube controllers. The PS2 controller is best suited, and the GameCube's directional pad is a little small, but all of these are responsive and more than serviceable with the game. All of the Soul Calibur cast returns either in form or in spirit. From the samurai Mitsurugi to the undead pirate Cervantes, from the nunchaku-wielding Maxi to the female ninja Taki, from the bizarre Voldo to the aptly named Nightmare, most all the old favorites are intact, each with a smattering of new moves. Some have changed more than others, but for the most part, tactics and combos that worked well in Soul Calibur still work well here.
