HEPA filters are the way to go !
Normally I consider these expensive from retail outlets but here on eBay you can find ones at a more reasonable price. Make sure the ones you get are still sealed in plastic to ensure they are not used or recycled. I use a tower air filter by Holmes and it has made a significant improvement in my indoor air quality. I live next to an industrial lot that recycles carpet and also has a dirt parking lot where about 20 Semi trucks come and go all the time. Between the dust, diesel soot, and carpet fibers these HEPA Units have reduced the build up of dust on furniture by more than half. Make sure you get an air cleaner with a carbon pre-filter which does a great job of eliminating odors and catches the larger particles thus extending the HEPA filter's life dramatically. A word of caution, If you have an air filter that uses this type of HEPA module make sure you pay attention to the module type. I've seen these HEPA filters all have the same construction but use different methods of attaching the HEPA module to the filter housing. My Holmes tower filter uses type D modules that attach with little tabs on each side. When these type C modules showed up I realized they have no way to attach them to my tower so I learned the hard way that the A - B - C- D designation which I didn't pay attention to really matters a lot. I was able to use these by duct taping them in place, but next time I'll be sure to get the type that attach correctly for my filter tower.

Very poor quality pre-filter.
The pre-filter on these C filters, and on two type U filters I bought recently, is increasingly flimsy allowing larger particles through clogging up the HEPA filter prematurely. Which, of course, means Honeywell will sell more filters.
