Spending a whole bunch of time with the Atari 2600 lately, the ways things haven't changed is surprising. Half of the best games were made by the manufacturer, not third parties. A movie cross over or other "franchise" is almost guaranteed to suck. Novelty or graphics will entertain for a while but the best games are the ones with solid gameplay. Most games are thin re-hashes of other games. Taking advantage of the compilation of reviews at atariage.com, though, I've been exploring the gems, and this is currently my favorite of the lot. The game play feels like Legend of Zelda. Critters come in sets (at first alone), each kind has a different movement pattern, and you need to get close enough to them to stick out that sword and gut them with it, without being run over. This game drops the whole "you get touched and you die" thing. Critters (aliens) touching you drains energy. Fighting drains oxygen. You need to supplies of both from treasure. Maps are large, and it's tense hacking your way through the map quickly enough to not run out of supplies while minimizing damage. While you're fleeing the station before it blows after you active self destruct, it's extremely tense, especially if you didn't have enough oxygen to finish some critters. Oh, and the critters are colorful and interesting, and well animated. Like I said, this is my current favorite.Read full review
