Product Information

Trelkovsky (director Roman Polanski), a Polish immigrant residing in Paris, moves into an apartment vacated by a young woman who committed suicide by leaping out of her window. Upon moving in, Trelkovsky begins feeling that the woman's personality traits are being thrust upon him. At a local shop, the proprietor offers him the breakfast and cigarettes that the woman usually purchased--and he accepts them. Holed up in the psychotic environment of a dark Parisian building that's peopled with odd characters, Trelkovsky feels himself overcome by a kind of madness. His slow mental deterioration finally compels him to emulate the woman's final, tragic hours. Polanski's twisted and darkly comic thriller was nominated for the Golden Palm (Best Picture) at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival.

The Tenant. Psychological thriller, engagingly creepy.
I knew this would be a good movie because it’s a Polanski film. A story of a man’s descent into madness after moving into a flat that had been previously inhabited by a woman who had thrown herself out the window to her death. A psychological thriller, viewer sensing disturbing outcomes, from the beginning. Roman Polanski directs and stars. Excellent acting and photography.

This movie is what I would call a fairly entertaining thriller. The reason I say this is that I have seen many movies whose plots are very similar to this one's. (In other words, this movie is not very original.)

Polanski has come back into the international spotlight with films like THE PIANIST and OLIVER TWIST, however Polanski used to be known for such rarefied shockers as REPULSION, ROSEMARYS BABY, and the seminal noir CHINATOWN. He was, er, IS the master of "mood-setting"! THE TENANT is one of his forgotten gems. I say forgotten because nobody ever mentions it in print anymore. I'm not going to get into specifics, read a plot synopsis on Amazon for story details. All I'm going to say is this film is anything but a letdown.
