About this product

Product Information

In BACK TO BATAAN, John Wayne plays Colonel Joe Madden, a rough tough officer serving under General MacArthur during the Second World War. When American forces are forced to pull out of Bataan, Madden volunteers to stay behind and organize the Filipino residents into a top flight guerilla force that will keep the Japanese on edge until MacArthur's promised return. There's some romance amid the suspense and sweaty action as an attractive Manila resistance liason (Fely Franquelli) falls for Wayne's second-in-command, Captain Andres Bonifacio (Anthony Quinn), an earnest fighter trying to live up to his folk hero father's reputation. Madden, however, is to busy for women, preferring to spend his time communicating by radio to his valiant men as they count the boats and plant the mines. The Duke is nicely understated in this atypical role, a nice counterbalance to costar Quinn's typically impassioned performance. War film buffs should enjoy the film's appealing blend of action, nail-biting suspense, and jingoistic patriotism. Director Edward Dmytryk would later go on to direct THE CAINE MUTINY and THE YOUNG LIONS.

  • The WWII Bataan story

Loosely based on some true events, "Back to Bataan" captures the story of guerilla war in the Bataan area after the Japanese invasion. John Wayne and Anthony Quinn are the major stars and provide an interesting balance to the script. Lots of guerilla warfare action! An outstanding older film that's rarely viewed today. Suitable for school age children and up (especially for a history class), provided that it has been reviewed by a parent first. Probably needs to be in the NTSC VHS library of a WWII historian or militaria collector. Please note that the review is for the movie only. When most reviews are written, there is no clue as to who the seller is.

  • Genuine classic WWII drama

One of the most inspiing of John Wayne's war classics this movie also show cases the talents of the great Antony Quinn as the rebal leader of the Philippe resistance. The movie portrays the struggle of the allied forces to retake the Philippines from the occupation of the Imperial Japanese. While this movie has lots of gritty action it also has many heart wrenching moments as it realistically portrays the brutal treatment of the Phlippino people at the hands of the Imperial Japanese. This movie is highly recommended for any collector and it's a great classic for anyone looking for a movie that will keep you glued to your seat.
