  • Good for what they are, but won't replace a high quality macro lens.

I have been exploring alternatives to an expensive macro lens. I have tried in one fashion or another the "close-focusing" feature of certain lenses, extension tubes, and even a reversing ring (which proved to be a novel experience for me). I have even considered, but have not tried, a bellows. When I read in a photography blog that close-up filters might be sufficient to satisfy the macro needs of some beginners or amateurs, I decided to try these after finding them for a favorable price. Theses filters seem to be very well-made, equal to or better than the quality of more expensive filters. They attach easily and fit well. They do indeed magnify the image falling on the sensor in your digital camera. I did not notice any significant image degradation, vignettes, or chromatic aberration. They will give you a magnification of whatever image is produced by your lens. I attempted to try them out on a 24-70 zoom lens with autofocus. Somewhere within the parameters of zoom, auto-focus, the magnification of the filters themselves, and my handholding of the camera, I seemed to have a great deal of difficulty finding the exact combination of factors--focal length, filter magnification, exposure settings, etc.-- that I needed. Ultimately, I found that manual focusing seemed to work better for me, but that takes time and steadiness, the latter meaning for all practical purposes that a tripod is needed. These filters are OK for occasional use, but if you are serious about macro look for a dedicated macro lens.
