About this product

Product Information

Weary of being alone in the vast forest, unicorn Amalthea (Mia Farrow) begins to wonder if she's the last of her kind. Following a rumor, she joins forces with feeblish wizard Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) and wayward barmaid Molly (Tammy Grimes) to look for the mystical Red Bull, a creature known to hunt and imprison unicorns. In order to walk unnoticed among men, Schmendrick magically transforms Amalthea into a beautiful woman. Together the three embark on a adventurous journey into the dark land of King Haggard, the man rumored to control the Red Bull. Based on Peter Beagle's novel of the same name, THE LAST UNICORN is a bright, colorful tale about love and loss. Farrow loans her fluttering voice indelibly to the lips of the unicorn, and Arkin is spot on playing the spell-casting wizard Schmendrick. The film also features the vocal talents of Jeff Bridges, Christopher Lee, and Angela Lansbury. Complete with an over-the-top soundtrack by the pop band America, THE LAST UNICORN is perhaps the high point of directors Arthur Rankin's and Jules Bass's film career. (They would soon move out of film to produce the two highly successful syndicated television series THUNDERCATS and SILVERHAWKS.)

The seller said that he leaves out the disc box to save on postage expenses, which was fine with me as I have extra boxes, and postage is getting more and more expensive. This gives the seller the chance not to raise prices on the discs. He supplied the ordered disc and disc box cover so I put it together in one of my extra boxes and it looked great. That said, the package arrived quickly. I watched the movie and had absolutely no issues. Thank you.

Unicorns have been many young girls' fantasy. This film fulfills that need nicely.

The voice actors are famous and well chosen, and even at the age of 30 one daughter bought the DVD. Even I liked it enough to watch it with them again. The story line is like a fable form days gone by. The animation artwork is similar to Rotoscoping of the Ralph Bakshi film "The Hobbit" from the 1970's. Or was it the Lord of the Rings? There are peaceful forests, stark lonely mountain ranges, a long journey across the world, a rom, ance story, and some "Oh my gosh" moments, such as when we realize we completely misunderstood how fearful 'the Red Bull' is going to be. The young apprentice magician is vulnerable, yet he is still trying to be the hero that everyone needs. That part was especially good.

  • REALLY GREAT MOVIE !! Magic -- unicorns -- heroes -- love -- an evil king !

A terrific movie of a lone unicorn trying to find out what happened to others like her. When she finds out she decides to see if she can locate them and get them back. Along the way she finds close good friends a apprentice magician and cook of a bunch of outlaws. They make their way to the other unicorn's secret prison guarded by a huge red bull and a mean old king that never smiles. As they draw near the castle of the King. the red bull goes on the hunt and finds her, so to protect her from the prison the magician changes her into of all things, a beautiful young woman. The Evil kings son, Leer, sees her and almost immediately wants to do anything and everything to win her smile and love. The King knows who she is, but is waiting for ...

  • The Last Unicorn DVD

This movie is a classic and one that I have grown up with. I first saw it on the big screen when I was very young and loved it ever since. The Last Unicorn is animated which makes it appealing to children, but I believe that it is not a children's show. Don't get me wrong, it is appropriate enough, but some of the content can be very deep. I purchased this DVD for my daughter's 5th birthday, and I know she will be surprised because she really likes this movie as well. I recommend The Last Unicorn to anyone who likes fantasy and magic. Also, Mia Farrow did the unicorn's voice and it was awesome!

  • Older movie, just as great as newer ones

This movie is one that my daughter and I watched many times when she was little. Now she is 24. She was in the kitchen singing this song and it was so familiar that I asked her what it was from. She said, remember that movie The Last Unicorn we used to watch all the time, of course I remembered. So, I thought I could surprise her with it for her birthday this year. She loved it and has watched it 3 times since getting it. The story is a good one, the characters are cool, the movie animation itself may seem outdated by others standards of the new CGI movies out there. That is what makes this movie unique, fun to watch and just as colorful as any other. It's a great movie to own, and watch over and over. You can't say that about many new movies, but there are a few.

  • A Classic

I remember when I used to watch this cartoon when I was a little kid. At the time it scared me. The vulture, the bull... I wouldn't be surprised if I had nightmares about it all. But for some reason I was enthralled by it and couldn't stop watching it. Years passed, I grew up and eventually completely forgot about it. Until one morning when I was going through my friend's old VHS collection... "The Last Unicorn" I didn't remember the plot, actually, I didn't remember much about it. I just remembered that I loved it. I popped it into that acient-looking VCR... and it happened all over again. The tree, the wizard, the skeleton. It all hit me like a ton of glittery unicorn poop. Great for kids, entertaining enough for adults... and perfect for any fantasy lover, The Last Unicorn proves that a ...
