Great Biography of a Great American Photographer
This isn't for everyone, a biography of a photographer can be just as boring as a trip to the museum for some. And it's not much as a collection of his work, though there are more than a few great photos through the course of the 100 minute film. For photographers looking to better understand photography, or teachers looking to enlighten students that photographs can make a difference ... this film can be an invaluable tool. This DVD is from the American Experience series on PBS, so the production is quality. With histories of some of his more memorable images told in fascinating detail. Although they do employ the cropped-panning of photographs, it does help tell a better story and serves the medium in which it's presented. If you want to reflect on a the ... If you want to reflect on a the evanescence of an Ansel Adams print there seem to be calanders of his every year and there are plenty of books filled cover to cover with his work. He's also written The Camera, The Negative, and The Print, three books on photographic technique. Though with the advent of digital photography the relevancy of those lessons in practical photography are diminished. This documentary, like nearly all PBS documentaries, is very well made and researched. Most people know Ansel's heroic landscapes, but what is revealed about Adams is that he was also an incredibly driven mountaineer and an accomplished concert pianist, and a founding member of Group F64. This group that first exhibited at the De Young Museum in San Francisco included Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Alma Lavenson, Willard VanDyke, Peter Stackpole, to mention a few. This group would make photographic history, collectively and separately, ushering in modernism and “straight photography.” We also learn that Adams' work was praised by Alfred Stieglitz who exhibited Ansel's photos in his New York Gallery. Love the DVD. Features the work of Ansel Adams but explains the motivation & history behind A A and his incredible photographs. I've loved his "portraits" of Yosemite and other places since I first viewed them. This DVD fills in the "human side" of those landscape masterpieces.

I love to watch this CD on Ansel Adams. Knowing more of his life helps as you look at his art in pictures. He was one of a kind. His photographs put you in the scene. They have life and depth.
