A number of reviews mentioned this is not as easy to play as a recorder and that is true. I've played guitar for over 30 years and a reed instrument was not an easy transition. Reading the reviews the how to book that came with the the xaphoon I was playing in no time. I takes more air to play than a recorder but I'm getting used to it. Not simple, especially if you have never played a reed instrument. And the fingering is nowhere near as straightforward as a recorder. But it is possible to get some really nice music out of this if you are willing to put in the time to learn it. The Maui Xaphoon is well built and such a simple design I can't see much going wrong with it in the future. I came to this instrument after spending most of my life playing string instruments. I was keen for a new challenge. Initially it proved very tricky as I have had no experience with any woodwind and knew of embouchure only as a concept.
