I'm a Contra fan, and I loved Contra III when it was released on the Super NES about a decade ago. This port brings some of the fun back, but the GBA version lacks the variety that Contra has always included in its games, and I think it was a mistake to replace the overhead levels with more side-scrolling levels. And the overhead levels would have been much better suited for the GBA system, especially in the link cable department. I would have had no problem with more levels of side-scrolling action, but to remove these overhead levels just makes the game more tedious and less imaginative. It's a good, fun shooter, but surprisingly short and just not as great as I was expecting it to be.
Great Game!! A handheld port of the original Super Nintendo game Contra 3: The Alien Wars. (The top-down levels are replaced with the train level from Contra: Hard Corps). I found this game to be very entertaining. After playing through the first few levels a few times you'll be able to reach level 4 or 5 with ease - and every single time they are exciting. Amazing music and sound effects also boost the re-playability of this great title. There is a password-based load game system, however in this day and age I've often found myself wondering 'what kind of notes am I supposed to write..' on my DS apps, iPOD aps, etc.. and this became an instant use. With a DS or GBA in your pocket having this game in it - you will never get bored.
If you like the series, you'll love this game! It's pretty straight forward, it's basically a run and gun shooter the whole way through the game. It's got a similar feel to the ones we already love (Contra, Super C, Shattered Soldier, Contra 4). If you're a newcomer to the series, it's still a great game, and you should definitely check it out. One thing different about this Contra from some of the rest is that you basically have a machine gun the whole way through the game rather than your regular slow shooter, which is nice since there seems to be a few more bad guys to blow up in this one. Graphics are nice, and the gameplay is challenging, just like the rest of the Contra games. All in all, you won't be disappointed with this one for the Game Boy Advance. Worth the money.
Could have packaged a bit better but a great game so it can be overlooked for fun.

What can I say about Contra that isnt already well known. This SNES game is taken to GBA format with killer graphics and a well extended game play. Love it and have been playing this one for years I just purchased another copy to play two player mode.
CONTRA III was easily among the top-10 SNES games, so it was going to seem obvious for CONTRA ADVANCE to get to the top-10 GBA games list. however, this game is plagued by obscene difficulty, getting stuck with ONE weapon only (instead of juggling between 2 weapons on the SNES) and plus it has levels taken from CONTRA HARD CORPS, the most impossible CONTRA of all time, and thrown in here. this is all more than enough to make you throw your GBA or SP or DS outta your bedroom window, without even bothering to open the window. so before you set out to buy this terrible game, make sure your bedroom window is open.
i love this game! i use to play it with all my uncles and cousin!! it can get a little challenging with only 2 lives but the weapons and graphic for this game is awesome!!!! i wish they made more games like this! brings back good memories
This port to the Game Boy Advance is very similar to the original SNES game, but is more limited, dumbed down, really taking away from the gameplay experience that once made this game a classic. The thing that annoyed me the most was in the original I believe Contra III was the first to implement the ability to carry two weapons. In this GBA version, however, this ability is taken away.
It’s contra for the Super Nintendo! You can’t go wrong with that
