    Excellent converter. Very low idle draw. Very minimal voltage ripple

    I am going to share my experience of testing and using this device. My application was putting it in my car for bluetooth audio purposes. This meant taking a 13.8v input and converting it down to 5v. First, a comment on size and quality. The converter is about the size of a quarter. All solder joints looked fine to me. I didn't notice any cracking or oxidation in the joints. Now on to my testing. I used a very high quality HP benchtop supply, a Fluke voltmeter, an IR temperature meter, some 2-10ohm 100W resistors, and a DSO 138 oscilloscope. Using these I tested the converter at various loads to determine voltage ripple and temperature. Looking at the first photo is the hottest temperature observed at about 500mA load. No complaints here. The next photo is the voltage ripple ...

    Good value, but applications may be limited

    I should've checked the driver datasheet and compare with the item photo. The item uses a 4.7uH inductor, which is too low unless you use this for 1.8V output according to the datasheet. This can be played with by other parameters, such as switching frequency and a compensation circuit though. I started with 12V input and 5V output with a DMM, and thought it seems doing what it's supposed to do. Then, I tried 12V input and 3.3V output. At a lighter load, no problem, but with a heavier load >1A, I noticed higher voltage than what it's set to. So, I pulled my o-scope. 0.1A load, no problem, seems reasonably quiet (< 20mV p-p). But at 1A load, it's basically ringing/oscillating, >800mV p-p. I tried a few different 12V power supplies, but nothing helped there. I looked into the item, and was ...

  • MP1584 modules, jacobsparts ==>> Winning Combo

    Homeboy DIY, Not E-guru: MP1584 Adjustable DC Step Down Module from jacobsparts is a Winner. Form factor is perfect; big enough to easily work with, small enough to pack in most anywhere. (kapton tape is huge; Altoids tins etc., high-end hot-melt glue => great! {if heat's Truly a prob, use Sikaflex}) FWIW: These modules do show a notable start > spike. @ 28V in, 11.1V out, start spikes usually 13+V; per Fluke 87V peak-min/max (stores read @ > 250 μs in duration, i.e. micro-seconds). Meaningless, except …. Finally, for you DIY Girls&Boys: Best thing I ever did was cough up for a used Fluke 87V.

  • Good

    I used only one so far in a spider project. Holds voltage pretty steady. Good small package.
