S-T-R-O-N-G magnets work better than whimpy ones
I started life out as a young wrencher taking apart anything my folks would let me...and then some. This has led me to an unusual approach to maintenance where cleanliness is key. And as a result, my vehicles have all lasted well in excess of 200,000 miles. The truth about any lubricant is that it not only prevents wear but it also carries in it suspended pieces of debris from normal break-in and wear. Surfaces polish each other as they turn and scrape against each other and this is where this debris comes from. Unfortunately, much of this debris is too small for the filter to trap. There are two types of debris suspended in any lubricant: magnetic [aka ferrous] and non-magnetic [aka non-ferrous]. Fortunately, in automotive engines the vast majority of this suspended debris is ferrous. ... I started life out as a young wrencher taking apart anything my folks would let me...and then some. This has led me to an unusual approach to maintenance where cleanliness is key. And as a result, my vehicles have all lasted well in excess of 200,000 miles. The truth about any lubricant is that it not only prevents wear but it also carries in it suspended pieces of debris from normal break-in and wear. Surfaces polish each other as they turn and scrape against each other and this is where this debris comes from. Unfortunately, much of this debris is too small for the filter to trap. There are two types of debris suspended in any lubricant: magnetic [aka ferrous] and non-magnetic [aka non-ferrous]. Fortunately, in automotive engines the vast majority of this suspended debris is ferrous. Enter the ingenious magnetic oil drain plug. As engine oil is pumped from the oil pan throughout the filter and to the engine, this same oil eventually returns to the pan [the reservoir] where it is recirculated. The pan is an opportune point where this ferrous debris can be captured and the drain plug sits at the very bottom of this oil reservoir. For a moment, think about refrigerator magnets. You can feel a weak magnet drawn to the fridge door at one distance [say 10mm] and strong magnets you can feel this same draw at another distance [say 20mm]. Regardless, the difference in the pull you feel is solely dependent upon the strength of the magnetic field of that magnet. Now, think about a magnet inside of an oil pan waiting for these tiny ferrous debris particles to float nearby and latch onto them. Weak magnets can only latch onto particles that float nearby [say 10mm] and stronger magnets can latch onto these same particles even if they float further away [say 20mm]. So it only makes sense if you are getting a magnetic drain plug [you already understand the importance of eliminating tiny ferrous debris suspended in the oil] to find the one with the most powerful magnet that you can to do the best job it is capable of doing. Neodymium magnets are far stronger for the same size and weight than their ceramic equivalents. Ceramic magnets are the types typically found in other drain plugs. It is normal for engines to polish the rubbing surfaces and it is normal for magnets to latch onto these ferrous contaminants. This is a much better drain plug than any other non-neodymium. The magnet as claimed in the advertising image exemplifies just how powerful this magnet is and it is worth every penny to get as much of these ferrous contaminants out of the oil before they are recirculated where they can cause more harm than good. There is no magic in making things last longer, just common sense. Here are my tips around engine oil: 1) Keep everything clean. What I mean here is to approach an oil change as a surgeon would approach open-heart surgery. 2) Always use a magnetic drain plug at your first oil change. 3) For a new car, change oil at about 3,000 miles for the first change and at about twice the recommended frequency of the owner's manual thereafter. 4) Always change the filter when you change the oil. 5) Always use a premium oil filter and oil. It's the old saying that applies here: pay me now or pay me later. I prefer to use common sense and pay more at an oil change than to incur the inconvenience of not having a vehicle because of an engine failure. A neodymium magnetic drain plug is a small investment that has far-reaching implications in keeping your car out of the shop.

Magnetic drain plug
