  • Great Radio!

Great radio. Intermod performance could be better, but for mobile use, and with the Taiwan-made quad-band antenna, this radio packs a punch. The face of the radio separates, making it possible to install it in a car with limited space up front. I did notice that it has a mini-usb programming port instead of a full-featured data connector like the HYS TC-8900R, or the original; Yaesu FT-8900R, of which this radio is almost a clone. Consider that if you're interested in packet, APRS, etc... If you're just interested in chewin' the rag, you'll find that the TYT TH9800 is more than adequate, and at an awesome price.

  • Excellent value at an affordable price

This radio is easy to program using CHIRP as the software that comes with the transceiver is not very useful. The transceiver produces a good audio signal, and the receiver audio is very acceptable. The radio ONLY transmits on FM so do not expect to get use on SSB or other emission types. I set it up in house for the initial programming/first use. I was able to make many contacts on 29.600 MHz and a couple on 6 Meter FM. This transceiver is great on 2M and 70 Cm repeater use. Having an antenna for mobile use on quad band will be marginal. Not because of the radio but due to getting one tuned. I recommend this radio would be very good for a low cost fixed/base use. It also would be very useful in a portable operation. For the price this transceiver is a very good value and one can expect it to perform well. I would recommend setting the power output to the minimum to extend the life of the unit.
