The ultimate in cheesy B movie horror!!
This odd little movie with a no name cast, cheesy 70s special effects, and a dark, sarcastic wit really strikes a strange note in the twisted realm of 70s horror movies. When Phantasm rolled out in 1979, it was pretty much laughed out of the theaters bowing to such legends as Halloween, Carrie, and Alien and the Amityville Horror. Many critics and people criticized it for its flaccid acting (with the exception of Angus Scrimm, the Tall Man) and special effects so cheesy, even the Government cheese was gourmet!! But all humor aside, like the ugly duckling that grows into a beautiful swan, this movie grew with time into a very fond and well accepted contribution to the Cult movie community. If you can get over the silliness of it all, Phantasm is a rather innovative show with that amazing ... If you can get over the silliness of it all, Phantasm is a rather innovative show with that amazing Silver Sphere flying with the blades out and the premise of the dead being somehow reincarnated into a creature capable of living on another planet, is both an intriguing, and really overlooked premise in the modern horror genre. And the shining character is Angus Scrimm, a fairly well known horror actor who plays a tall, intimidating "undertaker" who has supernatural powers and is capable of telepathy and immortality and has a rather snide, dark horse wit that really does give you the creeps with lines like "You play a good game BOYYYYYY". If for nothing else, the undertaker of this movie will make you a fan and make you honestly think you are indeed selfish or indulgent to even consider watching this. This movie is the true beginning of the B horror generation although older movies like Plan 9 from Outer Space existed earlier despite being one of the worst movies ever made, Phantasm got the formula right. This movie stands along the lines of the Toxic Avenger, Army of Darkness, and an endless list of low budget horror that is like finding a quarter in a desperate search for a pay phone. Its satisfying yet knowingly primitive. A solid movie for you eclectic horror fans in any format. But to truly appreciate this jewel, you really need to find it in its primitive state say a VHS cassette or a Laserdisc for you vintage fans, but there is a DVD for those who insist on the latest and greatest. Sadly however, this movie in the DVD format was made into quite a series (4 issued one made but not released) but none are even close to the original Phantasm so be warned! In conclusion, you can't go wrong with this Cult classic and like that comfort snack or favorite ragged t shirt, it finds a home in both your heart and your collection.
