My husband and I returned from a trip to England and Portugal and had fallen in love with the Indian food there. I purchased this book after having no success in finding any Indian restaurants in our area. The recipes are written for the layman and very easy to follow. The author explains the spices used, the area of India it is often made, as well as some of the cultural events in which it may be served. She also provides some American adaptations. We have made a few of the dishes already, and feel like we can now cook excellent Indian fare. Highly recommended!
Delicious recipes carefully tested for taste - had this book for 40 years - reliable

This quickly became my most used cook book. It is well suited to the American kitchen and the first chapters explaining the spices and methods of cooking at as useful as the recipes themselves. I went from knowing very little about cooking indian to being asked to do so by friends and family on a regular basis.
