I got a little nervous when I first got this since I bought it used and it did not come with the proper cables to connect to my laptop, but I had a spare cable and I updated the software on the bluray player software so it appears to be working properly now. The only small complain is that it's a little louder than my previous player, but it's not a big deal. I also like the fact that the cover opens upward instead of sliding out which I thing helps with wear and tear. Hope it lasts as long as the one I had before.

This is a good idea and I loved when I thought. I bought this unit and try it I home, I have a new MacBook Pro with last version of el Capitan. After unboxing and connect to the USB the product didn't work and it was not recognized. I tried in a Windows Notebook and was recognized and work, but when back again to Mac nothing Then, I move myself to the documentation and found a driver/application has to be installed. First bad thing, anyway I downloaded, installed, reboot (per documentation advice) re-connect the device and nothing again. Long story short, I went to the store and change it for a LG drive which works as soon as it was plugged into the USB

Trying to break into bluray ripping etc is easier than ever. Or, it should be. The tech isn't new, so prices for the gear are reasonable now. Not all BD drives are created equal though, and that's where you have to be careful. This drive is about 10 years old and that's a good thing. No encrypted firmware etc. It's also a Pioneer, so you know it's going to be much better than some no name drive. You will need extra software to get the most out of the drive and it's not going to be free. After you've done all of your research, you'll likely end up here, with this drive. It's an excellent drive with true USB 3 speeds.

I needed a Blueray player that would boot in UEFI mode and this worked. My only con on this is that it's very slow when copying DVD's or general recording jobs but since it's very reliable the speed doesn't bother me. Upon further review this thing is junk. Having trouble burning DVD's. Gives me errors, burns extremely slowly and then fails to complete the burn.

Does not come with software. If you want it to play Blu-Rays, you have to download specific software. Would have been nice to know this ahead of time. I could have purchased a regular DVD burner cheaper and been able to do everything I needed it to.
