A glimpse of a long ended genre of coming of age film making from Lord of the Flies to Summer of '42

I had heard about this film since I was 15 when it came out. In spite of the liberalness of the early 1970's this film was considered "extreme" in its content and use of nudity. Having never seen it, I was delighted to obtain the rental version that is no longer available to investigate this film for myself. The quality and price of the DVD are its chief redeeming points. There is little doubt that the comments and public reception of the film are merited; by the "politically correct" foolishness of the past quarter century, this film would not have produced, but for the early 1970s, the concept of innocent nudity was tolerated as a hangover concept of "boys being boys". As to the film plot, well, there isn't any - just a jumping around from clothed, unclothed - and there isn't much ...

  • Top critical review

Like the curate’s egg — good in parts. recommended.

An odd film; a somewhat pretentious mixture of teenage coming of age and Lord of the Flies, all amid sand and surf. I couldn’t quite make out the role of the clergyman / officer, and the premise of the teens being there for parts in a play didn’t really work for me. However, rare, cult, Arthouse movies should be a little bit way out, so I’m pleased I have a copy. There are messianic overtones, and the youngsters’ escapades on the beach reflect their journey through adolescence. I’m not sure that the random and often haphazard approach to this journey is executed to maximum effect, and whilst I appreciate the youth of the participants, their acting ability leaves a great deal to be desired. Great credit but only 3 stars.

  • Odd COA Movie

Strange, but thought provoking, destructive sometimes it seems just for destruction sake unless you are inclined to deep social philosophy which can be fun in its own twisted way. May not ever watch again, but glad I did.

  • okay for a arthouse film not great

its okay for arthouse film not great found it be very boring not worth money i paid for it so give this item 3stars and no more would not recommended buying it but thats my opinion the characters in the film do not interact very well with each other with poor acting very weird ending for a film just cuts of at the end with no credits.

  • Rare Cult Oddity

Atmospheric and utterly strange film that has similarities to "Lord of the Flies," this is a very rare title that earned controversy due to it containing underage nudity. For fans of weird cinema with oblique symbolism. The Italian landscapes are gorgeous and the movie possesses a dreamlike quality. sure to be a collectors item..
