Golden oldie stands the test of time...
Back in the early 1970s when I first got into modeling Lindberg models were everywhere... Back then, basic shapes and toy like features were the rule of thumb because models were pretty much classed as toys. Lindberg's kits were basic and sturdy... but then they were meant to be played with. I recently picked up the Lindberg 1/160th scale Landing Craft Infantry kit for a conversion project. The kit has about 59 parts in thick grey plastic an instruction sheet and a small sheet of decals and another small sheet of paper flags. The detail is basic and the ancient molds seem to have fared well, at least my example was molded well with very little apparent flash (the wafer thin plastic leakage attached to parts due to older worn molds). The parts breakdown was logical... left and right hull ... Back in the early 1970s when I first got into modeling Lindberg models were everywhere... The parts breakdown was logical... left and right hull sides, the front and back walls of the deck house, the roof of the deck house, left and right conning tower sides, conning tower roof... and a host of deck fittings, guns and other small bits. Straight out of the box, the kit has the shape of the LCI however more experienced modelers might be disappointed... or elated. Disappointed because there are a lot of details that are very basically molded or left completely out. Elated, because this kit is a VERY good basis for a super-detailed scratch build. The real LCI was 158.5 ft long, with a 23.5 ft beam. The Lindberg LCI scales out exactly at the 1/160th scale listed on the box for length and beam. This is an excellent starter kit for new modelers to cut their teeth on with its basic shapes, thick plastic and low parts count. More advanced modelers will want to use a lot of aftermarket 3d printed details to really make this old kit shine. My conversion project is converting the LCI to a Landing Craft Support (Large) Mark 3 which was based on the LCI hull. Once this project is done, I'll be picking up a few more of these kits... A Landing Craft Infantry (LCI), a Landing Craft Infantry, Rocket (LCI(R)), and a Landing Craft Flotilla Flagship (LCFF) are in my to do list. I recommend this kit to modelers of all ages.
