Now let me say that I needed to downsize. I had a 16-thread dual xeon ESXi server running and a homebuilt FreeNAS box. After going through the time and energy of building a much cheaper FreeNAS box, the simplicity of Synology's solution is well worth the price. Not to mention at nearly 1/2 the power consumption of what building with your own components will result in. It even runs all my docker always on docker containers that necessitated multiple VMs before. Tech is fun but sometimes footprint, power consumption, and reliability are better day to day and this achieves that. Sidenote: Use SMB2 with large MTU and disable SMB3 for best speeds, some docker containers will require being started with a docker compose file over SSH after which they can be managed through Synology. Also don't get SSD caches, as you are limited by the 1GPBS ports well before you'll ever need SSD cache, that was a poor design decision. Also buy the 20 dollar RAM stick from samsung not the ridiculously priced "synology" branded stick.Read full review

This uses Synology's DSM software, and for my needs it offers exactly what I want in an easy to configure system. I use the NAS to do Time Machine backups for a couple of laptops, to run a Plex server for my digital music / videos, and to archive some old but important files. As I use wifi the raw speed of it doesn't matter as much to me as it might to some others. As I'm familiar with DSM the setup was easy. The hot pluggable drive trays let me install drives without tools, and Synology's web site has a page which lets my laptop connect to the NAS to do the initial configuration. The NAS itself is quiet, but the discs picked to populate it will make more noise than the NAS's fan. I have a couple of WD Reds (quiet and slow) and a couple of Seagate Iron Wolfs (louder and faster). Because of the Seagate drives I'll probably move into a cupboard. A couple of weeks in and it's working fine. It's possible to expand the memory if I want to run Docker containers in the future.Read full review

Bought to replace an aging DS213 and it's a world of difference. This is my new Plex Server and it works great. If I had to gig it on something, it would that it is not really quiet. Unlike my Ds213, the fan on the DS920+ does not turn off when it is sleeping.
