Players take the first-person role of the renegade Richard B. Riddick and attempt escape from the sector's most impenetrable prison planet, in this action game that explores the brooding anti-hero's early adventures. Escape will require a spectrum of staple video gaming skills, including straightforward shooting, stealth moves, and even some 3D-platforming. The sci-fi story begins as the captured criminal Riddick arrives at the top-security prison facility known as Butcher's Bay, and it follows him through his violent endeavor to escape.<br><br>Although the action plays from a first-person perspective by default, the viewpoint switches to third-person in order to accommodate certain more athletic tasks, such as shimmying across a ledge or making difficult a jump. When in stealth mode, the first-person view has a blue tint. With a variety of skills and abilities available to them at nearly any point, players must choose how they will conquer the game's different challenges. While stealth can be deadly efficient, players may also find that a full-on, run-and-gun approach will sometimes serve them best -- depending on the point in the story and the hero's current arsenal.<br><br>The game is centered on the character of Riddick, and features levels and missions that explore his criminal credentials and the origin of his "eye-shine" abilities. A full-fledged, stand-alone adventure in itself, Escape From Butcher Bay also serves as a prequel to 2000's sci-fi thriller Pitch Black, which first featured Diesel as Riddick, and to the higher-profile 2004 follow-up film,The Chronicles of Riddick, released concurrently with the game. Vin Diesel's portrayal serves as the model for Riddick and Diesel provides all the character's voice acting.

Experience The Chronicles of Riddick
This game is pretty good sticking to the movies, if you're into that kind of thing. I bought this game because I love the movies and Vin Diesel isn't bad either. The graphics are not state of the art, but it was made a few years ago when Windows Vista did not exist. There is a problem with the initial game itself; it seems to be missing OpenGl v. 1.5 and a patch needed to run it. A free version of OpenGl can be found on-line by just typing it in a search engine such as google. The patch was harder to find, but that too can be found at Yahoo Games for download, but get the english version; the european version does not seem to agree with the actual game. Also, Sierra and Vivendi Games do not have any technical support for this game because it is, once again, kind of old. So don't ... Something new for the PC!
The graphics in this are sublime and the story is just as great. This is very innovative since a different approach is taken to the HUD. Instead of it always being visible and serving as encumbrance, it only appears every time you are hit and your life bars are little white boxes. You can also go melee in this game and punch people as well as use a shiv (knife) and, it's just really cool. You have to play it to believe it. There are also special features within the game where you can listen to the director give his thoughts and views about the game and explain some of the production tasks. So much fun!
I don't normally like first-person-shooters. I got bored with Halo after about 10 minutes. Similar games affected me the same way. But there's something about Riddick. Maybe it's the eyeshine. Maybe it's the setting of the game. Maybe it's the versatility in the ways you can take people out. Maybe it's just because I'm a big Riddick fan (though it took me years to finally decide to get this game). I don't know. But I've only had this game about a month and I've already played it over and over and over. And lest you think I'm some adolescent male who's just into muscle-bound death machines, I'm a 36-year-old mother of 3 daughters (though Riddick is definitely one HOT muscle-bound death machine)! Love the fighting, disarms, sneaking up behind people and doing the neckbreaker move. Love the dialogue and characters. Even though the games 4 years old, I still play it regularly.
