This film begins when a convicted wife-murderer, Ben Jordan (Rutger Hauer), is released from prison after serving 15 years. Jordan relocates to a small town attempting to rebuild his life anew. It's there where he's assigned a social worker to follow-up with him after being in prison for so long. All along, Jordan has contended that he did not commit the crime. Among the few who've come to believe Jordan is innocent is his social worker, Laura Mathews (Natasha Richardson). She's so convinced of Jordan's innocence, Mathews investigates Jordan's case. While nearly everyone else, including the town's Chief of police, believe Jordan's guilty, Mathews has serious doubts after interviewing other people who were involved.
