    You can make a more reliable device.

    The padding material is similar to the original material from Porter Cable. After moderate use it degrades significantly. It shreds into lumps of gooey powder. Much better off to clean the metal plate and fasten a more robust material as a pad ... like a re-inforced padded anti static mat that has reinforcing threads.
