At the time that South of Heaven was released, we were just starting to see a massive amount of death metal or black metal bands appear. Slayer has always been able to lead the pack and this album is no exception. The title track starts of the album with possibly the slowest and most haunting intro to a Slayer album to date. But it quickly leads in to the blistering "Silent Scream" and "Live Undead". Of course, the guitar stylings of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman still offer a cyclone of terrifying riffs back and forth, yet on this album, their composition seems more methodical. The overall tempo of the album may not run a neck-breaking speeds but it seems that more thought was put into South of Heaven than previous albums. As a matter of fact, I belive this is the fist Slayer album with an acoustic guitar on it (intro to Spill the Blood). A definite for any Slayer fan!!Read full review
This is one of the classic Slayer albums and a must-have for fans of the band. For someone unfamiliar with the band, it is a good start, as the songs generally are slower in tempo and more accessible than some of their other material. In particular, this allows drummer Dave Lombardo more room to be creative and his drumming is a strong part of this album. Having said that, the tempos are still fast enough. Personally, I like this record. Some Slayer fans don't, often citing the slower songs as a major reason. Then, of course, there are the people who don't care for Slayer, but I can't really help them much. The one thing I don't care much for is Slayer's lyrics. Not because their message offends me -- I just find them kind of stupid. Too much posing on how shocking and 'evil' they are as a band. If there is a downside to the slower songs, it's that you can actually understand more of the lyrics.Read full review
