Product Information

WINNER of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program Now a Netflix animated miniseries starring James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Oscar and Grammy award-winner Sir Ben Kingsley. A worldwide bestseller for more than forty years, Watership Down is the compelling tale of a band of wild rabbits struggling to hold onto their place in the world--"a classic yarn of discovery and struggle" ( The New York Times ). Richard Adams's Watership Down is a timeless classic and one of the most beloved novels of all time. Set in the Hampshire Downs in Southern England, an idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale of "suspense, hot pursuit, and derring-do" ( Chicago Tribune ) follows a band of rabbits in flight from the incursion of man and the destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they travel forth from their native Sandleford warren through harrowing trials to a mysterious promised land and a more perfect society. "A marvelous story of rebellion, exile, and survival" ( Sunday Telegraph ) this is an unforgettable literary classic for all ages.

Reviews
"Quite marvelous...A powerful new vision of the great chain of being."--The New York Times Book Review, "Spellbinding...Marvelous...A Taut Tale of Suspense, Hot Pursuit and Derring-Do." -- Chicago Tribune, "Quite marvelous...A powerful new vision of the great chain of being." -- The New York Times Book Review, What a relief to read of characters who have honor and courage and dignity, who will risk their lives for others, whose love for their families and friends and community is enduring and effective, To capture the feeling of the verdant English landscape in Richard Adams's "Watership Down" (Atheneum, 496 pages, $29.99), first published in 1972, Aldo Galli painted in the real locations described in the story. In his finely wrought illustrations, the rabbits Hazel and Pipkin crouch beside the real Nuthanger Farm and Hazel, Bigwig and Fiver make their way across the real Hampshire downs. Mr. Galli brings a sense of intensified realism to his depictions in this 40th anniversary edition. Foliage is luxuriantly, impossibly green, and the edges of things-the feathers of birds, the fluff of dandelions-look as sharp as if they were cut from glass. As a gift, this edition would suit anyone over the age of 10, including adults.

Watership Down was the first novel I read as a child

Watership Down was the first novel I read as a child. I'm now a 56 year-old teacher, but never forgot the impact this book had on me as a child. The story is a strong depiction of community, overcoming adversities and faith. I don't know why it took me so long to read it again. Wait, yes I do. I've been reading countless other books. I definately reccommend it.

  • English Project

This book has a very interesting and mind opening plot that allows your to better understand not only nature, the political systems and the way different species govern and socially stabilize each other. For me personally it allowed me to better understand how the human kind may have civilized itself and got to the point in which we are today. I would recommend this book for Pre-Ap English class because it has text that can allow students to become better at reading and digging into the context and picking out specific types of illustrative speeches and figurative language you wouldn't normally hear in a day to day novel. Over all, his way of writing has a very detailed general type of writing, but has metaphors incorporated into the texts in some areas of the novel that can be heavily ...

  • Watership Down

During my first year of college this book was required for my humanities literature course. I wasn’t sure how I would like the book, but when I started reading it I was captivated by interest. I couldn’t put the book down I just wanted to keep reading it. Watership Down started off as a book about a group of rabbits that live in a small community. In that small community there was a rabbit named Fiver, he had physic abilities and he told the head rabbit that something bad was going to happen to their community (also called a warren). The chief rabbit didn’t believe Fiver, so Fiver went and told another rabbit named Hazel about what he thought was going to happen to the warren. Hazel believed Fiver and they were both tired of no one in the warren taking Fiver’s warnings seriously. That ...
