About this product

Product Information

Hobbits are simple folk. Small people with hairy feet, they are not cut out for adventure and prefer to laze about and eat. A particular hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Orson Bean), is taken by surprise one morning when the mighty wizard Gandalf (John Huston) knocks at his door. Soon Bilbo finds himself inducted into a party of dwarves bent on reclaiming their mountain from the deadly fire-breathing dragon, Smaug. Insisting that the timid Bilbo is a master thief, Gandalf insures the danger-loving dwarves that the quest will include many mishaps and perilous encounters with goblins, trolls, and dwarf-eating spiders. Among other things that the reluctant Bilbo discovers on this amazing journey is an enchanted ring that turns its wearer invisible, and soon the hobbit transforms from a master bumbler into a master burglar. Based on the beloved novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, THE HOBBIT is an animated classic that was brought to the TV screen in the late 1970s by Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass. Rerun by networks for years, this tale of Middle-earth consistently awes viewers and has inspired a whole new generation of Tolkien fans. The story continues in Ralph Bakshi's THE LORD OF THE RINGS and concludes in THE RETURN OF THE KING.

    The Hobbit cartoon version

Happy to have found this one. Have been searching for a while. It brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. This beats the Peter Jackson version of the Hobbit. The shipping speed was great and the item was affordably priced.

    Beware! Terrible quality

STAY AWAY FROM THESE! Terrible bootleg looks like it was taken straight from the vhs. Finding the WB release isn’t a real cheap route these days but it’s worth it. This isn’t. Straight to the trash bin.

  • Wonderful with great features

I purchased the VHS of the Hobbit years ago when my children were young. Now I have grand children and my VHS player had eaten some of my VHS tapes. My grandchildren loves this DVD the Hobbit just as much as my children loved the VHS.I now have made wonderful memories with my grandchildren as I did with their parents.

  • Excellent purchase, great bargain.

The Hobbit is a classic adventure tale, beautiful animated! This story remains a very faithful, if abbreviated, version of the Hobbit book. While the animation and subject material may be a little too intense for the VERY young, it is a highly recommended family classic by me! This bargain is a must have in every movie collection. This disk contains only the movie, there are no special features.

  • A Nostalgic Bounty of Magical Excellence

This movie is so fantastic, it's difficult to know where to begin in regards to "reviewing" it. The DVD itself is great and the artwork on the cover is amazing. If you grew up with this movie as I did, you know that one big advantage here is that it obviously outshines the VHS version merely because of the increased lifespan of the DVD disc over the VHS tape, not to mention the menu features that offer all kinds of goodies that you wouldn't get otherwise. I am really particular when it comes to things that I have sentimental attachment to, and this movie certainly falls into that category, but while I do have a soft spot for the "original", this re-release offers the same great film with the added benefits of new age technology. As for the movie ...
