Dare I say... better than NBA Jam?
This game is HIGH quality. Midway sports from this era was something special anyway, but this game in particular has a little extra something. Aside from being 2 player; which is a great addition, the single player never gets old. The checking makes sense on a sports level in hockey, and having the goalie makes scoring more compelling than in NBA Jam. You might catch fire, and burn the net down while getting unlimited turbo. All the players have stats, and it’s got all the NHL teams of the era. To me, it’s NBA Jam in a setting that makes more sense, and in a sport that makes every steal, break away, and goal count. The arcade game I loved growing up finally on a console
NHL Open Ice: 2 on 2 Challenge Smash, Bang, Goal I spent hundreds of dollars playing this game in the local arcade growing up. Man I wish it would've come to console sooner. That being said, it isn't as good on console as it was in the arcade. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I got my hands on it after I played Wayne Gretzkys 3D Hockey for the N64. Final Verdict: 3/5 Rent or Buy: Definitely worth checking out again, but if you can only choose between this game or Wayne Gretkys 3D Hockey, I'd go with Wayne.
