bob marley at the top of his game
I decamped to Boston in 1975 after graduating college in Hartford, CT for a change of scene and moved into an apartment in Central Square. The midnight movie in Harvard Square every week was "The Harder They Come" and when I walked a block from my apartment there was a reggae record shop that would blast the tunes out into the street, drawing me in. I owned a juke box and the owner and I became friendly over time: each stroll to the corner brought home a Burning Spear, Mighty Diamonds or Bob Marley 45 pressed in Jamaica ... all new to my ears. Needless to say I was primed when Bob Marley finally toured through New England - I caught him at every stop from The Music Inn in the Berkshires to this concert at The Boston Music Hall. The cover of this album caught my eye recently at the newly ... The cover of this album caught my eye recently at the newly stocked vinyl section at The Barnes and Noble chain. I never thought I'd have this aural experience again but it was always a treasured memory from the sternum pounding swing of the Carlton Brothers to the sweet sound of the I-Threes. I've yet to see the video but I can picture Bob with his eyes shut tight, trance dancing around the stage during the instrumental breaks: pure joy. I can't recommend this disc enough not only for it's musical excellence, but for it's spiritual directness - it leaps off the grooves and speaks to your soul: this is what I heard that night so long ago. I wrote this in one unedited jump tonight so apologies for spending more time talking about me than the incredible music that's contained on these two discs ... give it a listen & all thanks and praises to the most high!
