About this product

Product Information

Brandishing the mighty ancient Japanese Samurai sword Daikatana, fight your way through four time periods, from the post-apocalyptic San Francisco of as distant future to the grimy Ancient Greece of ages past. You'll meet 64 monsters and encounter 25 different weapons in the detailed 3D environment that uses an enhanced version of Quake II's unified engine technology.

Daikatana was created in part by legendary Doom and Quake designer John Romero. Romero left id Software to form Ion Storm and this game is one of the new studio's first releases. Playing as Hiro Miyamoto, you're joined by two computer-controlled characters, Mikiko Ibihara and Superfly Johnson. The game's AI applies to all characters, allowing voice communications between you and your two sidekicks.

The game's four episodes are all quite different with distinctice environments and period-appropriate weapons, art, music, and creatures in each time period. Daikatana also features original audio tracks -- a total of 18 songs in MP3 format.

  • Bad Rap

Yeah, it got slated on release and justifiably so. Romero just wasn't competent to run a design studio.... great ideas, good vision, but woefully short on expertise. I recently took it out again and, forgetting the bad press, it's not a bad fps, certainly not as bad as we all thought at the time. Technologically, it was average for its time, but you have to give it full marks for trying to do something different. The concept was good; the execution left a lot to be desired. Shame really, because the industry needs people like Romero - people who try to push the envelope.... he failed, but at least he made the attempt. I, for one, hope that he tries again, but with decent backup.

  • Ignore the bad reviews, own a piece of gaming history.

This is your chance to own a piece of gaming history. Own a game signed by the creator who was integral part of changing the face of the video game industry and developed what is arguably the most popular game genre, the first person shooter. If I had the spare scratch, I would absolutely bid on this.

  • Don't believe the hacks that wrote bad reviews!

What a bunch of mama's boys those earlier reviewers are! THis is a great game, period! And what's with the guy that entered the readme with his own comments???? Wuss! Daikatana has good action, good combat, intuitive gameplay. No, it's not Crysis, but it has a LOT to offer the serious gamer. Oh, and to the hacks that gave it a bad review - get a life. One guy hadn't even bought the game, just WATCHED his friend play it for a while. PLAY THE FREAKIN' GAME!!!!

  • Not worth it

Daikatana was met with high expectations over the several years of development it received from a very well-respected game designer. But what came out failed to justify the time and expectations. Lighting is horrible, controls are unresponsive, enemies can be annoyingly repetitive, and paths past obstacles can be difficult to discern. It got bad scores when it came out, from a variety of reviewers, and it appears to have deserved all of them.

I bought this game only because i played it years ago and enjoyed it. But, I've played so many games since then I found it was'nt as good as i thought it was.
