Although this is a "L" lens for a full frame camera it works well with both full frame and APS-C DSLR. Focal length does change when attached to crop sensor camera to the approximate equivalent of 35mm when shooting at wide angle so keep that in mind. But the truth is it really doesn't matter too much so just enjoy shooting with this lens. It takes fantastic pictures with crystal clear details and can be used for any occasions. To portrait to landscape and anything in between. This is probably the least expensive Canon "L" lens available on the market. Highly recommended.

Canon L lenses are all superior quality and produce great images. Internal zoom and focus make this one especially nice to handle. Fast, accurate and whisper-quiet focus gives you more usable shots. Using this on my 1.6 crop 60D still provides a good wide-angle for indoor use. My 28 mm Sigma always had me backed into a corner.

Beautifully crafted lens. I loved looking at this lens. Immaculate construction. Solid like a rock. Better than a kit lens? Well, no, not really. The kit 18-55 mm is not a bad lens and if you look you can find one for $50. It also has a bit more range than the 17-40. Photos were sharp but not as sharp as an 18-135 base model lens let alone a nano. If you want to tell your friends that you have an L series lens here you go. They're not all that pricey and they're always available. Good, solid performer and better in low light than a kit lens. Otherwise, get an 18-135 if you're shooting crop sensor. They're better and cost less...

This is my first L lens to pair with my nifty 50 and I must say I'm so glad I got it. I originally wanted the 24-105 however I am so glad I got the 17-40 for the simple fact that on a Full Frame sensor 17mm is so amazing to capture a different perspective. It doesn't seem that much from 17-24 but the perception and field of view is simply stunning. It's great for those small tight spaces where you want to capture a scene and even at 40mm lifestyle candid portraits are not to bad. Now at F4 you don't get that creamy bokeh that you would from say a 2.8 or 1.4 ect however it's still pleasing if your subject is far away from anything in the background. The lens is very sharp and even at 40mm F4 you can still focus pretty close and is nice and sharp. There is def some dark edges at both 17 and 40mm however it's easily remedied in post processing. The focusing is super fast and locks on nicely as well. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a reasonably prices L lens who likes landscapes or just walking around and wants to capture the moment you might be in. Read full review

For any Canon user especially those into landscape photography, this is an excellent lens, very fast throughout the entire focal length. Because I use this lens for landscape photography, I love the weight of the lens. This lens is primarily mounted to a Canon 5D Mk II as well as a Canon 7D. This lens I find a better suited for the 5D for I what I purchased it for. There are lots of other excellent alternatives, Sigma or Tamaron but ultimately I love the glass in this lens, just my preference. Great buy overall!
