About this product

Product Information

Whether you're a lifelong believer, a devout atheist, or someone who remains uncertain about the role of religion in our lives, this insightful manifesto will engage you with its provocative ideas. With a close and studied reading of the major religious texts, Christopher Hitchens documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix. In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's The End of Faith , Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion.

"[An] impressive and enjoyable attack on everything so many people hold dear ... Hitchens has outfoxed the Hitchens watchers by writing a serious and deeply felt book, totally consistent with his beliefs of a lifetime. • An antidote for religion

Hitchens is witty, funny and compelling! As I have moved from agnoscitism to atheism, this book gives depth into the pursuit of human values that I never found on christianity with fairly understandable statements. In a world where the far right is banning books over and over, It's the most suitable time to read this one.

  • Great book! A must read for free-thinkers and believers alike.

This is a comprehensive critique of religion. Hitchens is a brilliant writer and renowned for his contrarian thought, this is a masterpiece indeed. Personally it gave me good reason to switch from ambivalent about religion to full-on anti-theist. The book is not only informative, but entertaining. I gave it to a friend as a Christmas gift, I thought it fitting considering his recent death and his opposition to the religious right that tries to ruin the mostly pagan holiday. The Hitchslap will truly be missed, but this is a work that will live on beyond his years.

  • Interesting reading for people wanting another point of view.

I bought this book because I like reading about other people's theology. At first Mr. Hichens seemed a bit bitter about religion being shoved down his throat when he was a child. Later chapters show a rational adult point of view why religion can be harmful to nations. He makes several interesting points. I still have my beliefs, but found his point of view to be interesting and to make me think about my own ideas.

  • An awesome case study!!!

I considered my nonreligious before, but after having read this manifesto I am now officially religiously nonreligious!!!
