Buying anything that is related to home cinema, is like throwing a bag of marbles on the ground and then trying to pick your favourite. Every year, the manufacturers bombard us with the next best thing. I consider myself to be an enthusiast and even I get confused. This is my way of doing it and its worked pretty well so far. I bought the Panasonic BDT-500 knowing it was a slightly older model, but had everything i was looking for and it was way cheaper than its release price. I had my eye on the new 4k model, but at £500, it was a little pricey and the 4k blu ray discs are expensive. So, sticking with standard blu ray, i wanted good sound as well as good picture quality. They focused heavily on the component quality on this model and the DAC's inside are good enough for music and movies. I say good enough, but if someone wants audiophile music quality, then your budget will have to go up considerably to a universal sacd/blu ray player. I paid £100 and blimey, is that good value for money. I sold my older denon blu ray, only because it lacked some of the newer decoders that i wanted. This machine has everything. Great picture, great sound. good feature. Its well made too. Not flimsy like some of the cheaper models and as its a 2012 model. Great price. The remote is very clever. Took a while the get the hang of, but its touch sensitive, so all you need to do is swipe (like on most smart phones) to the next menu and tap the screen to access. So, why 4 stars and not 5. i dont believe in giving 5 stars. That would mean perfect. But, its pretty damn close. Definitely 5 stars for £100. not for £350. (2012 price). Lastly. Panasonic work closely with some of the biggest films studios. They research what the film makers want to see when it goes to blu ray. That is one of the reasons why Panasonic players win so many awards.Read full review

Bought this player to upgrade from my Panasonic BDT220. Superb build quality! Loads up fast. Simple to set up. The touch pad is great and you can use easily in the dark ! (although is is huge and some find it frustrating). Excellent Wi-Fi capabilities. The picture quality is sensational, offering the cinematic solidity, ultra-sharp detail rendering and natural colours. Great 3D efects! The sound is much improved also and you can get 5.1 surround from the most DVD’s. Music on CD is conveyed with silkiness and balance. Unfortunately lack of support for Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio, but is still good product for the price.

This is a brilliant bit of kit which plays all regions dvd's effortlessly. Just pop in and play. The remote also has a finger mouse built in which is a great idea. I'm no techno-geek so if I can set up and use this believe me anyone can. A very slight down side is the digital display is not very bright even at it's optimum setting but there's no way am I going to deduct a star for that reason. Also the condition when it came was excellent for second hand. Just make sure you have a HDMI cable to hand as this was NOT supplied. Finally the picture quality is first rate.

If you can find one - buy it! Brilliant spec! I have one purely for DVD in a home cinema and a second unit used in a HiFi set up for CD's. They are now older but really the flag ship model prior to ceasing manufacture.

Even buying second hand, Panasonic is worth buying. I've had my current TV 4YRS that was 2nd hand, and it was time to update my Blu-Ray as I had my BDP-30 from new so time for a upgrade. And am I so glad I did. It's like getting a new TV. Colurs are more vibrant without being over saturated. More detail, higher contrast so more detail in th eshadows as well. Sound is awesome, even as a CD Player. Twin HDMI. Remote is a bit big & bulky, but they work. SD Card slot for pictures and movies Fast Load times. Not fussed about 3D so can't comment. I did my research, if you can't buy a new up to date model, and not too fussed about 2nd hand. Then look at Panasonic. Built to last. This machine is replacing a 8 yr old model. playing on a 8yrs old TV, and looks fantastic, and a lot better than many of my friends new 'smart' tv because buying great old stuff is better than mediocre new. And this is the Blu-Ray to buy for under £100 that will give you everything inc Netflix - everything but 4k which is no big loss. Because if you can afford 4K Movies on a 4k TV at the moment, then you ain't buying 2nd hand Blu-Ray machines. Maybe on my next upgrade in 4yrs time :-)Read full review
