  • One of the Best Musicals

The jacket of this 2-disk DVD says "the greatest of the movie musicals." I don't know if it is the greatest. After all, it doesn't have Astaire in his prime--and it doesn't have Judy Garland. Not that it doesn't have a lot of great things. Notably a couple of great numbers of Fred with long-legged Cyd Charisse--with those fabulous Minelli sets. Then there's the famous "Triplets" number--three hams dancing on their knees. And Fred's shoe shine number, where they found a real shoe shine kid in NY who could actually dance! And the wonderful Jack Buchanan duetting with Fred--and holding his own. And finally the "That's Entertainment" gem which has become the National Anthem of musicals. Did I mention the Minnelli sets? The fabulous colors and artwork--especially in the Buchanon character's ...

  • An almost-forgotten classic, a must for Astaire fans

This show came somewhat after the biggest, best-known movie musicals. Fred Astaire is older than in is days with Ginger Rogers, but Hey Baby, he is still Fred Astaire. The "Shine on Your Shoes" number has to be one of his best. The plot is thin, but that's OK. Fred plays a song-and-dance man who left Broadway for the movies. His movie career fell on hard times, so he returns to B'way and reunites with some friends (Nannette Fabray and Oscar Levant) to star in a new show they've just written. American audiences probably only know Jack Buchannon from this movie, but he is wonderful in it. Buchannon was an English actor and singer, quite famous in England and Europe. He plays the producer/director of the stage show, who manages to turn a simple script into an overwrought nightmare of ...

  • Buy this one!!!! The Best of the Best!!!

I had seen this years ago and really enjoyed it then. Now,I realize just how talented the movie industry was back then. Computerized whatevers did not exist. What you saw is what they did and they really did some spectacular stuff. Astaire and Charisse were at the top of their game and Minnelli was just the guy for the job of turning out a near perfect picture. I got such a thrill out of this movie that I have gone online and bought a bunch of them to give out to friends. Pure magic! Own this piece of musical history. Worth the money, many times over.

  • Staging of musicals

Allways enjoy movie musicals, mostly because of the changes that can take place with the scenery being associated with the songs.

  • The Band Wagon

"The Band Wagon" is one of very few musicals that surpasses entertainment and achieves artistic merit. Vincent Minnelli was at the peak of his career, recently finishing "An American in Paris" and "The Bad and the Beautiful." Fred Astaire was at his best while Cyd Charisse could not have been any more mesmerizing. It was a collaborative enterprise that just seemed to click. A true classic. Highly recommend it!!!!
