This scanner is now part of my photo toolkit.
My Linux computer supports this scanner, with no additional software other than the standard package XSane. The support is specialized or works best for 1200ppi. Results can be had in 300ppi mode (but with light and dark bands) for photographs and documents. And 2400ppi (with dark and light stripes) scans are successful for slides and negatives when using the slide and negative holders. The full color range setting for XSane is what I use for both slides and negatives. The color of negatives can be reversed in Gimp, the standard package for graphics on Linux. Gimp can do these scans directly with the XSane plugin. I bought this to evaluate against the HP PhotoSmart C4480 All-in-One for photographic quality, and to make use of the convenient negative holder (two frames in one scan). There ... There is no disappointment; everything is just as I expected from my previous experience with a 3570c under Windows XP and Linux. Namely, it's a bit noisy and requires an occasional restart of the XSane software, but I am not bothered by this. I do not expect occasional restarts to be necessary under Windows XP. The photographs and negatives look great as can be at 300ppi when I do the routine setting of black and white points, but with negatives I set for each color its individual black and white points, and one or two midrange points in the curve for each color as well. This last is a necessity with use of any film scanner

Love HP products
I had a visioneer scanner. I hated the software that made it run. Finally it quit working. So, I decided to go back to my 'old school rules' and by HP. I bought this scanner at a great price and it was new. When I got it, I applied the software and plugged the scanner in. WOW .. it works great and the software loads quick. The software is not complicated, so easy to use. I should have stuck with HP in the beginning!!! I appreciate the great prices and products I can get from ebay and the really honest vendors there. HP 3970 scanner
This machine will scan many different types of things, but I bought it specifically to scan Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides, and I cannot get it to do this correctly. I have been scanning slides on another HP scanner at work (a different model), but this one seems to lack some of the on-screen directions found on the other one. I suppose I am doing something wrong, but the directions on the screen are no help.This machine will scan many different types of things, but I bought it specifically to scan Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides, and I cannot get it to do this correctly. excellent scanner, everything functions as described, could not be happier with my scanner, I mainly use it to scan documents, black & white and color pictures, and does an outstanding job, and It even has control for picture contrast you could make your pictures lighter darker and so on.
