Adaptation of classic H.P. Lovecraft story starring Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson and Tommy Chong. An odd meteorite lands on a remote family farm. Vegetation, animals and humans all begin to change in strange ways. Then all hell breaks loose. Visually convincing effects support the crazy story.

Read Lovecraft's short story. The adaptation takes the viewpoint of the family going mad while Lovecraft's story uses the doctor as the narrator who sees the mental and physical deterioration of the family from a spectactor's viewpoint. Stephen King's approach to writing was used to adapt the story (if you can't scare people, gross them out). Too many gross-out scenes. And--really?--when the vegetation around your property changes from green to purple (for example), you don't notice? And you don't think something is wrong? Nick Cage is his usual quirky self, the acting is fine, the photography is great, but the film could have been toned down and some of the horrors hinted at (like Val Lewton's films) rather than showing the viscera.

Pretty good film, nice effects. I wouldn’t pay more than about $10.00 for a dvd/blu ray copy though. Entertaining but not really memorable like the great horror films are IMO.

I can't deny that this film is well-made and will haunt you afterward. But I can't say it's entertaining...unless you are entertained by watching children and animals die in agonizing, disfiguring ways. I found it hard to relate to the family at the center of the story. Before the meteor crash that initiates horrifying changes, the teenaged daughter is doing black magic rituals. The father seems weirdly obsessed with his alpacas. The wife is a workaholic. The younger son looks about 11 but acts like a 4-year-old, constantly carrying a stuffed animal and rarely talking. The older son smokes pot with an elderly man who lives in the woods. These people were neither pleasant enough that I wanted them to survive, nor unpleasant enough to deserve their awful fates. Their suffering seemed random and was depicted graphically. While it is true that people in real life often suffer horribly for no apparent reason, I turn to movies to escape that sort of thing, or at least make some sense of it. Read full review

Actually ,, it's not that great. Cage is a jerk,, Might be Lovecraft, but, ANNIHILATION was a better movie.
