Synopsis
Margaret Angus presents the stories of some of the architecturally and historically important limestone buildings, and of their owners, and thus tells the story of Kingston from the landing of the Empire Loyalists in 1784, through its brief period as capital of Canada (1841-43) up to Confederation., Kingston is remarkable in that the visual evidence of its place in Canadian history and in Canadian architecture is still here: many of its older streets are lined with houses built of stone, and charming old limestone farm houses are found even in new subdivisions, surrounded now by modern, split-level dwellings. This book will inform and delight all those who take pleasure in the old buildings and in the social history of this country. Mrs Angus presents the stories of some of the architecturally and historically important limestone buildings, and of their owners, and thus tells the story of Kingston from the landing of the Empire Loyalists in 1784, through its brief period as capital of Canada (1841-43) up to Confederation. Full-page photographs illustrate the buildings; maps show the changing shape of the community, and help the reader to locate the buildings discussed in the text.
