I saw the movie 12 Years a Slave and wanted to read the book. I wondered how much translating the movie's writers had to do from the language of the 1800s. I also wanted to know if any details were missing from the movie, which I have seen 4 times. The book satisfied all of my questions. The narrative flows so well that I am wondering if the book is an edited version--edited to bring it into 20th century expression. In any case, the voice of Solomon Northup is loud and clear throughout the book. He was a very intelligent and well-educated man. Reading about what he suffered brought my own responses (sorrow, guilt, anger) closer than the movie did. I came away with fresh insights into how black lives and white lives became what they are today. I recommend the book to anyone who loves good writing and history and in particular, the topic of slavery. Read full review
