  • The Only Book about WWII US Army Liaison Aircraft Operations in Europe

The best book about US Army Ground Forces Liaison aircraft operations in Europe during WWII. Wonderful photos for historians & aircraft restorers. Liaison aircraft were civilian Piper Cubs airplanes painted olive drab (OD) and assigned to artillery units to provide an aerial platform for adjusting artillery on enemy targets. Ken Wakefield, the author, became fascinated with aviation when as a boy he witnessed a US Army artillery Liaison aircraft unit conduct flight operations in a field near his home as they prepared for the invasion of France. Wakefield later became a BOAC pilot and purchased his own Piper L-4. Many former WWII Liaison pilots or their families provided information and photos of their experiences during the war. This a book that is essential to understand the origins of the present US Army Aviation branch.
