Based on William Hayes's autobiography, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS tells the harrowing story of a young American tourist arrested and sentenced to 30 years in prison by Turkish authorities for trying to smuggle two kilos of hashish out of the country. Billy (Brad Davis), suffering through the harsh realities of the Turkish penal system, sees a glimmer of hope when his father (Billy Kellin) arrives from the States with the intention of securing his son's release. But when that effort fails and the prison's savage environment becomes too much to bear, Billy opts for the only possible solution: breaking out of jail and riding the "midnight express"--prison slang for escape--to freedom.Director Alan Parker (MISSISSIPPI BURNING), aided by Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning script, fastens an unflinching gaze into the darkest recesses of physical and emotional cruelty. Supporting cast members Randy Quaid, John Hurt, and Bo Hopkins give stellar performances, and Giorgio Moroder supplies a jagged yet entrancing soundtrack for a film that is at one and the same time a Kafkaesque nightmare, a riveting exposé, and a testament to the dogged human thirst for dignity.

    unforgettable movie

    I saw this movie when it first came out. I lived near the person this movie his about, Billy Hayes. I worked with someone who went to school with him. I remember being intrigued by the movie, and it really made an impression on me. Now that I have a 32 year old son I wanted him to see it. It's a very exciting movie, and it was done very well. Thank you.

    Good film about what happens when you try to smuggle drugs and get caught in all places, Turkey! This is based on a true story and is well acted throughout. The score is excellent as is Parker's Direction. Look for the Alien chestburster guy as an old drug addict!

    You must do what you must do.

    Saw it as a teenager and then again in my 60's and it had the same impact and now I get to show it to my children so they can know the penalties in other countries for criminal activity are beyond severe.

    Great movie NOT FOR CHILDREN MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY

    Not for children. Mature audiences ONLY!! I read the book as well many years ago and it is way different from how the movie is. But anyway it's suspenseful. Brad Davis (RIP) was awesome.
