ReviewsWithout in any way giving in to hyperbole, I would say that this translation is a 21st century monument, changing not only the way in which we view the French 18th century, but providing a guide to the present and future, "Sade's masterpiece was The 120 Days of Sodom , which has just been published as a Penguin Classic for the first time ... the great merit of this edition is the thoroughly excellent translation by [Will] McMorran and [Thomas] Wynn. It has none of the phony archaism of earlier English translations. Instead it is like a window, allowing us to have as clear of view as possible of Sade's mind and world." --The Economist "Without in any way giving in to hyperbole, I would say that this translation is a 21st century monument, changing not only the way in which we view the French 18th century, but providing a guide to the present and future." --Andrew Hussey "We thought this translation was quite exceptional in its capacity to capture the true voice of this strange and difficult eighteenth-century text, the textual and editorial scholarship of the translators, their wonderful handling of the terminology and the diction of the original, along with the fluency of their translation, and the ways in which it creates for the first time for Anglophone readers a properly accurate version of Sade's text." --Ian Patterson, "Sade's masterpiece was The 120 Days of Sodom , which has just been published as a Penguin Classic for the first time ... the great merit of this edition is the thoroughly excellent translation by [Will] McMorran and [Thomas] Wynn. • Interesting psychologically, not for SQUEAMISH PEOPLE

I had read his other books, and this was supposedly his "masterpiece" or "most abhorrent", depending on your viewpoint. De Sade, many people do not know, has other brilliant writings that have NOTHING to do with sadism. The forward(s) explained ALOT! The cultural context, absence of medicine..., casual death was commonplace. Disease was rampant, infant mortality, death in childbirth; people didn't bathe, brush their teeth, wash their hair...syphillis may have accounted for alot of the madness in the upper classes at this time, leprosy, disfigurements, poverty-stricken families...famine, war. Simply put, I believe the Marquis de Sade was truly a product of his time. He chose to see and expose the worst of humanity, because he had seen the worst. He had a military career as a very young man, & I posit it affected him in profound, disturbing ways.... It seems his wife, (& other lovers along the way), had no problem accepting him as he was...but there were these abberant violent episodes, manic nightmare writings...a truly tortured man, in my opinion. If he lived today, I have no doubt he would be found to have syphillis or another brain destroying disease...and mentally ill, perhaps w/PTSD.
