'The apt choice of quotations will provide an invaluable reference for garden historians and illustrates that garden design is so much more than plants and drawings ... Although this book will not fit in your pocket, put it in your suitcase as an essential reference for serious garden expeditions.' - Historic Gardens Review, 'The apt choice of quotations will provide an invaluable reference for garden historians and illustrates that garden design is so much more than plants and drawings ... Although this book will not fit in your pocket, put it in your suitcase as an essential reference for serious garden expeditions.' “ Historic Gardens Review, 'The illustrations and the 1000 or so plans of individual gardens, which are such a distinctive and often rewarding feature of the work, are invariably printed close to any reference to them, so there is never any need to go hunting elsewhere in the book ... These plans can, at their best, be an absolute revelation.' - Timothy Mowl, Times Higher Education Supplement 'The apt choice of quotations will provide an invaluable reference for garden historians and illustrates that garden design is so much more than plants and drawings ... Synopsis
An updated version of this book is now available as European Gardens (2011), also by Tom Turner. Expanding into other regions are Asian Gardens (2010) and the forthcoming British Gardens, both also by Turner and published by Routledge. Tom Turner, well-known teacher and writer in landscape architecture, garden design and garden history here explores more than 150 gardens over four millennia of Western garden design. He considers the why, the what, the how and the where of garden design by tracing the development of gardens through history and across social, political and philosophical boundaries. Fully illustrated throughout, each chapter critically examines a particular type of garden both as part of a wider socio-political context and as an aesthetic entity, asking how the design of each garden reflects the philosophical approach of its creator. Inspirational, reflective and informative, this book brings together knowledge and understanding from a diverse range of related interests to add depth and breadth to a fascinating subject., Covering four thousand years, this beautifully illustrated book gives the reader a thorough history of the influences on gardens and their socio-political context, from the principles of garden design philosophy to international modern designs., An updated version of this book is now available as European Gardens (2011) , also by Tom Turner. Less than completely satisfied despite being listed with defects. It was more damaged than expected. Also did not come with a speaker cover or grill. Which was overlooked by me but could have been stated by seller so that it was known. Item arrived quickly, and seemed to take can in packaging! Contacted seller about a crack naturally they claimed it wasn’t there when shipped! But there was no damage on outside of box. It was described to have dings and scrapes but it was a bit worse than picture

The seller must have worked for NASA. I have never received a book so expertly packaged for shipping! Thank you! The book was in pristine condition and even included an original receipt in the back where someone bought the book in a gun store in 1996. This was a great value, and I can't thank the seller enough for both the fast shipping and outstanding packaging! Nice work!
