    Good movie, but bad reproduction

    Really good movie, but it is obvious the DVD version was not remastered from the original film, in that it most likely was copied from a damaged original. The sound was scratchy in places, and the picture was mediocre at times. A very short scene in the movie was also missing, but did not detract from the show. I bought this DVD hoping it was a better copy than the VHS I made from a TV viewing more than 20 years ago, but it was pretty much the same quality, minus some footage. Perhaps a decent original copy does not exist anymore, or the manufacturers got it from the same source as my TV copy?

    A poor match for the restored original.

    This version of the film has been cut, eliminating or cutting down some of the best scenes. They are not the scenes that advance the plot; the narrative is perfectly comprehensible. Character development and some of the best scenes Howard and Oberon share, and those in which Howard makes Percy Blakeley a perfect fool (which are the funniest parts) have been dropped. The film and sound quality are poor, too, so it is not even pleasant to view what is left. A complete, remastered version appeared on the Warner streaming channel, Filmstruck. It showed why the film has lasting appeal. That is why I took a chance on this pressing. It was a mistake; I threw it away. Sorry. Don't buy if you are looking for great entertainment.
